The British Rail Standard Class 7, otherwise known as the Britannia Class was designed by Robert Riddles for mixed traffic duties. In all, 55 of the Class were built at the BR Crewe Works between January 1951 and September 1954. The BR Standard Class 7 locomotives took their names from great Britons, Scottish Firths and former Star Class locomotives. Engine No. 70008 'Black Prince' entered service on the 28th April 1951 working as an express.

The Britannia Class locomotives were versatile machines whereas other locomotives tended to be designed, built and used either for passenger or freight duties. 'Black Prince' was named after ‘Edward of Woodstock’ the eldest son of King Edward III. Britannia Class No. 70008 was first based at the Norwich engine shed but later travelled to the town of March in Cambridgeshire and finally to Kingmoor. Locomotive No. 70008 was withdrawn from service in January 1967, and stored for five months before being cut up for scrap at Campbells of Airdrie in June 1967. This Rail Legends model depicts ‘Black Prince’ carrying the BR ‘late’ emblem circa 1950.
