The Grumman F-14A Tomcat in Iranian service is one of the most fascinating and unique chapters in modern aviation history.

Iran remains the only country outside the United States to have operated the F-14 — and is the only nation still flying the type today.

Acquisition Before the Revolution
In the early 1970s, under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Iran sought an advanced interceptor capable of defending its vast airspace and countering high-speed Soviet reconnaissance aircraft.

After evaluating options, Iran selected the F-14A Tomcat equipped with the powerful AWG-9 radar and AIM-54 Phoenix long-range missile system.

Between 1976 and 1978:

– 79 F-14A aircraft were delivered
– Large stocks of AIM-54 Phoenix missiles were supplied
– Iranian crews were trained in the United States

At the time, this made Iran’s air defence capability one of the most sophisticated in the world.

After the 1979 Revolution
Following the Islamic Revolution, U.S. support ceased abruptly. Many predicted the fleet would quickly become unserviceable due to the complexity of the aircraft and lack of spare parts.

However, the newly formed Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) managed to keep the Tomcats operational through:

– Reverse engineering
– Local manufacturing of parts
– Cannibalisation of airframes
– Black-market procurement networks

Combat in the Iran–Iraq War (1980–1988)
During the Iran–Iraq War, Iranian F-14As played a critical defensive role. Acting as long-range interceptors and airborne radar platforms, they:

– Engaged Iraqi MiGs and Mirages
– Used Phoenix missiles to achieve long-range kills
– Provided battlefield surveillance and command support

Western estimates vary, but many sources credit the Iranian Tomcats with dozens of confirmed aerial victories.
