About The Sunderland Mk III
The Short Sunderland was one of the most famous seaplanes of World War II, entering service at the end of 1938 to equip Royal Air Force Coastal Command squadrons. Introduced at the end of 1941, the Sunderland Mk III became the definitive variant, with a large number produced. It was a key asset in countering the German U-boat threat during the Battle of the Atlantic. The Mk III featured a revised hull configuration and adopted new patrol and submarine-search equipment. Its offensive load, which could include bombs, mines and depth charges, was increased to meet the demands of long-range sea patrols. Powered by reliable 1,065 hp Bristol Pegasus radial engines, the Mk III achieved a top speed of 336 km/h and, crucially for maritime operations, a range of 2,800 km.
These capabilities made the Sunderland Mk III an effective patrol bomber and a symbol of endurance over the Atlantic, combining range, durability and specialised equipment to perform search, patrol and anti-submarine duties.
