In 1952 the amphibious PT-76 tank came as a shock to NATO because the Soviet Army now had a tank, which was fully prepared for amphibious landings without any prior preparation. With its D-56T 76mm gun it could very effectively fight free and secure bridge-heads. Tanks of this type were used in almost all states of the Warsaw Pact as well as many other allied countries.
