History
Undoubtedly, one of the most effective jet aircraft of the post-war period, the remarkable American-made McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom served in various international air forces, with Britain being a major user. Initially acquired to provide the Royal Navy with a contemporary replacement for their outdated De Havilland Sea Vixens, Fleet Air Arm Phantoms primarily defended the fleet from aerial threats in all weather conditions, while also delivering powerful strike support.

Known as the Phantom FG.1, these naval jets were a sight to behold and remain among the most visually appealing aircraft to have served in Britain’s military. Operating this large aircraft from the relatively small deck of HMS Ark Royal necessitated several significant modifications to the British Phantoms, as well as to the carrier itself, with only the top tier of Britain’s fast jet pilots chosen to fly them.
